Altrad leads the way for Connected Competence site-based assessments
Altrad has streamlined its competence assurance of workers by adopting a hybrid testing regime that combines testing at external centres and site-based assessments.
This allows workers to complete Connected Competence tests on-site but retains the benefits of the standardised, recognised programme.
Altrad Integrity Services (formerly Stork UK) was one of the founding companies for the industry-led Connected Competence programme, an industry driven programme supported by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).
The fundamental principle of Connected Competence is to assure an ongoing base level of technical competence for workers through industry-recognised, standardised testing, thereby creating a safer, technically competent and transferable workforce.
Following approvals, Altrad conducted its first Connected Competence site-based assessments (SBA) for Industrial Coatings in December 2024 and for Thermal Insulation in April 2025.
Since then, 22 SBAs have been completed to date, and this process has now become part of standard operating practice.
Vicky Moir, Head of Operations Resourcing, said: “Connected Competence testing gives Altrad and our clients the confidence that every (in-scope) worker demonstrates the required base level of technical competence, verified through both knowledge and practical assessment at the point of recruitment.
“We continue to work closely with the ECITB to further enhance the Connected Competence journey and ensure it evolves to meet the needs of industry, clients, and the workforce.”
Graeme Ainsley, Project Manager, said: “Connected Competence plays a crucial role in ensuring operational excellence and workforce safety. By verifying that individuals mobilising to our assets have had their technical competence formally assessed and validated, we can be confident they meet the high standards expected across our operations.”

PBS creating a safer, measurably competent and mobile workforce through Connected Competence
In just seven months, 97% of PBS’ site-based trades personnel completed nearly 1600 Connected Competence technical tests.
